Why Life Insurance Matters More Than You Think

Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.” That’s not just about money. It’s about intention. It’s about deciding — on purpose — that the people you love will be okay after you’re gone.

Let me be real with you for a second.

Most people know they should have life insurance. It’s one of those things that sits on the mental to-do list somewhere between “get a will” and “start saving more.” We know it’s important. We just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

But here’s what I’ve learned sitting across from families in some of the hardest moments of their lives: the families who had coverage and the families who didn’t have completely different experiences of grief.

One family gets to focus on healing. The other is fielding calls from creditors before the funeral is even over.

What Life Insurance Actually Does

Strip away all the industry language and here’s what life insurance is: it’s a promise you make to your family today, that gets kept even if you’re not here tomorrow.

When you pass away, your policy pays a tax-free lump sum — called the death benefit — to the people you named as beneficiaries. That money can:

  • Replace your income so your family can stay in their home
  • Pay off the mortgage so your spouse isn’t house-hunting while grieving
  • Cover the car loans, credit cards, and debts that don’t disappear when you do
  • Fund your children’s college education even without you there to save for it
  • Give your family time to grieve without financial desperation driving every decision

That last one matters more than people give it credit for. Grief is hard enough. Financial panic on top of it is crushing.

Term Life vs. Whole Life — Plain English

There are two main types and people confuse them constantly, so let me break it down simply.

Term life insurance covers you for a set period — usually 10, 20, or 30 years. It has the lowest premiums, which means you can get a lot of coverage for a relatively small monthly payment. A healthy 35-year-old can often get $500,000 in coverage for around $25-$35 a month. That’s less than most people spend on streaming services.

Whole life insurance covers you for your entire lifetime and builds cash value over time — money you can actually borrow against while you’re still living. The premiums are higher, but so is what you’re getting.

Most families need both at different stages of life. Term to handle the heavy lifting during your working years. Whole life as a permanent foundation that lasts forever.

The Cost of Waiting

Here’s what nobody tells you about life insurance: every year you wait, it gets more expensive.

Not a little more expensive. Significantly more expensive. Because insurers base your rate on your age and your health at the time you apply. The person you are today — your current age, your current health — is the best version of you for getting a good rate. Next year, that’s not guaranteed.

A $500,000 policy that costs $30/month at 35 might cost $65/month at 45. And at 55 with a few health changes on file? You might be looking at $150-$200/month — if you can still qualify at all.

Waiting isn’t neutral. Waiting is a decision that costs your family money.

One More Thing

I want to say something that doesn’t get said enough in this industry: getting life insurance is an act of love. It’s one of the most selfless financial decisions you can make, because you’ll never personally benefit from it. It’s entirely for the people you leave behind.

That’s why I do this work. Not to sell policies — but to help families make a decision today that will change the trajectory of someone else’s tomorrow.

If you’ve been putting this off, let this be the nudge you needed. Let’s talk.
