Cover Your Kids: Why Your Children Need Life Insurance Too

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6

I know what you’re thinking. Life insurance for my child? That feels morbid.

I hear that. And I want to gently reframe it, because children’s life insurance is actually one of the smartest financial gifts a parent can give — and it has almost nothing to do with death.

What Children’s Life Insurance Really Is

When you insure a child, you’re doing two things at the same time:

1. You’re locking in their insurability forever.

This is the big one that most parents miss. When your child is young and healthy, they can qualify for life insurance with no issues. But life is unpredictable. A diagnosis — Type 1 diabetes, a heart condition, cancer — can make them uninsurable as adults, or dramatically increase what they’d pay.

A policy you put in place today guarantees that they’ll always have coverage, regardless of what their health looks like at 25, 35, or 55. That protection can’t be taken away once it’s set.

2. You’re building them cash value they can use later.

Whole life policies for children build cash value over time. By the time your child is ready for college, starting a business, buying their first home, or getting married, that policy has real money in it that they can borrow against — tax-advantaged.

What It Costs

This surprises people every single time: life insurance for a child is remarkably affordable.

A whole life policy for a healthy child can often be secured for $15-$30 a month. That’s a monthly coffee habit. But instead of a latte, you’re building a financial foundation that follows your child into adulthood.

The New Baby Conversation

If you just had a baby or have one on the way, this is the perfect time to think about coverage — for your new addition and for yourself.

A new baby changes your coverage needs dramatically. Where you may have needed $300,000 in coverage before, that same baby might push the real number closer to $600,000 or $700,000 when you account for 18+ years of support, education, and the life you want them to have.

I always tell new parents: the best gift you can give your child in the first year of their life has nothing to do with a stroller or a crib. It’s making sure that if the unthinkable happens, they are financially protected, cared for, and set up to thrive.

A Word From One Parent to Another

We do everything to protect our kids. Carseat checks. Helmet rules. Vitamins. Doctor’s appointments. We protect them in every way we can see.

Life insurance is how we protect them in the ways we can’t see — the future risks, the health surprises, the what-ifs that we pray never happen but need to be ready for.

It’s not morbid. It’s motherhood. It’s fatherhood. It’s love in action.
